Tasmania’s automotive industry is stepping in to support Meals on Wheels, with the Tasmanian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (TACC) and its members donating $5,000 to help keep vital community services on the road.
The contribution comes as rising fuel costs place increasing pressure on volunteer-driven services, with Meals on Wheels organisations across Tasmania working hard to maintain deliveries to vulnerable members of the community.
TACC State Manager Bruce McIntosh said the donation is about practical support when it’s needed most, but also highlights a broader issue impacting essential services.
“Meals on Wheels provides an essential service to many Tasmanians, and right now they’re feeling the impact of rising fuel costs just like the rest of our industry,” Mr McIntosh said.
“This is about helping keep their vehicles on the road and ensuring they can continue supporting the people who rely on them every day.
“But it also highlights the need for governments to recognise the real impact fuel costs are having not just on businesses, but on essential community services, and to consider practical, targeted support measures.”
Meals on Wheels President Katie Kelly welcomed the support, saying it would make an immediate difference.
“Our volunteers are out on the road every day, delivering more than just meals—they provide connection and care to people who need it most,” Ms Kelly said.
“Rising fuel costs have made it more challenging to deliver our service, so this support from TACC and its members will help us continue reaching our clients across the community.”
TACC represents Tasmania’s automotive industry, advocating for and supporting businesses that keep the state moving, while also playing an active role in supporting local communities.
