TACC Pre Election Submission

TACC has released our comprehensive pre-election submission to all political parties today ahead of the 2025 Tasmanian State Election. This submission represents the collective voice of our 400+ member sites and the 7,500 Tasmanians employed across our industry.

Our Industry Priorities Presented

Our submission presents 18 detailed recommendations across five critical areas that directly impact your businesses:

  • Skills and Training – Addressing the training crisis following the TasTAFE Campbell Street closure and securing funding for new facilities
  • Vehicle Safety Inspections – Advocating for mandatory roadworthy inspections to protect consumers and support our inspection businesses
  • Insurance Industry Reform – Continuing the mandatory MVIRI Code of Practice to improve industry-insurer relationships
  • Energy Transition Support – Securing government assistance for the transition to zero and low-emission vehicles
  • Waste Tyre Management – Addressing the escalating costs and environmental concerns of end-of-life tyre disposal

Key Funding Requests

We have specifically called for:

  • $450,000 continuation of funding for the new Cambridge training facility
  • $15 million infrastructure modernisation fund for TasTAFE facilities in Devonport, Burnie, and Alanvale
  • $30 million continuation of automotive teacher training programmes
  • Transitional relief funding for ZLEV infrastructure
  • Consumer incentive packages for electric vehicle purchases
  • Government support for waste tyre collection and recycling capacity

Your Industry’s Challenges Highlighted

The submission clearly articulates the significant challenges facing our members, including:

  • The disruption to 200 automotive apprentices due to facility closures
  • Tasmania’s ageing vehicle fleet (oldest in Australia at 13.3 years average)
  • High failure rates in interstate vehicle inspections (38% for passenger vehicles, 50% for towables)
  • Extreme cost increases in waste tyre collection since December 2021
  • The need for support during the transition to electric vehicles
